I am lucky enough to be part of a well established and storied lindy hop and vernacular jazz dance troupe The Big Apple Lindy Hoppers, which was founded in the mid-eighties in New York City as the performance arm of the New York Swing Dance Society. We are holding auditions in September to find our new crop of dancers and I was commissioned by our wonderful choreographer and director Laura Jeffers to design the flyer for the auditions.
Because our dance was born in the thirties and the scene leans toward vintage fashion, a retro look seemed appropriate, so I went with a vintage poster feel (which is close to my heart anyway) and a color palette aptly evoking an apple! We also are an amateur troupe and a very enthusiastic one at that, so I wanted to convey that feeling as well. The beautiful logo with the city skyscraper and the two dancers was made by Laura Berkowitz Gilbert of Boomerang Studio many moons ago, and she was nice enough to let me incorporate it into the new flyer design. Then, I printed the flyers myself and hand cut them, because handmade!
I hope you like it, and if you are interested in Lindy Hop, feel free to scour the web, there's a good chance there's a scene in your area that offers classes and holds events!
Until next time, many happy swing outs!
